As the population in many developing countries shifts to rapidly urbanizing clusters, the sporadic collection and substandard and unhygienic disposal of solid waste looms as a major concern -- with negative effects on communities' health and environment. Despite waste collection and management's taking up a significant percentage of a municipality's budget, this vital service has still lacked sufficient funding to safely dispose of people's trash. To help funding in this sector, GPOBA to date has supported two solid waste management (SWM) projects -- in Nepal and the West Bank -- which we feature in this issue.
