Overview
This activity supported RBF/OBA approaches to promote enterprise- based, large-scale dissemination and the adoption of clean cooking solutions in Sub- Saharan Africa, improving access to sustainable clean energy and biomass use.
The ESMAP-PPIAF-GPOBA facility, with an ESMAP block grant and the AFREA TF financed:
(i) the initial stock-taking, market research and other upstream activities that would lead to the development of a viable large-scale clean cooking program, and
(ii) the design of the program in 3-4 pilot countries.
Activities included:
- Two regional workshops among stakeholders to discuss the design of the Clean Cooking Initiative,
- A market research report on 3-5 pilot countries on the biomass energy industry with a focus on market potential, market segments, value proposition and market barriers.
All workshops and reports were completed and received media coverage in various specialized outlets, including AllAfrica.com.
Since the initiative was launched in Dakar, Senegal, some activities took place in other sub-Saharan African countries:
Uganda- a partnership supporting a national action plan on clean cooking.
Senegal - the national government and the World Bank to scaled activities while coordinating with other sector stakeholders on market intelligence, quality assurance and technical training.
DRC - the World Bank's Forest Investment Project (FIP) team prepared the project component on production and adoption of improved cook stoves. A number of studies were conducted and publicized, maintaining the dialogue and innovative thinking around the initiative.
